Ok I'm like two or three years behind with this, but hey, buying books is too expensive for someone like me, and I have to wait to borrow them to read them.

Anyway, read, The Daily Show with Jon Steward Presents "America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction". Extremely satirical yet sadly accurate brief overview of American history and the shaping of Democracy, all done in the style of a high school history/social studies textbook, right down to the graphs, charts, footnotes, and uselessly informative little Were You Aware? boxes on the side of each page.

Sharply funny and totally merciless to everyone; no Founding Father myth is safe, and don't think they are any easier on the Democrats than they are on the Republicans...or the newsmedia. I don't think it's the kind of book that's going to convert anyone or make them see sense, but it ought to be placed right alongside the actual (outdated, lying) textbooks in classrooms now.

Not slashy, so don't get your hopes up.

The only sci-fi series I read is the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster-Bujold. It's the only sci-fi I've ever read that focuses on actual people and problems and not techie crap and big boobies. ANYWAY. My point is, she has written a one-off fantasy novel, and it was quite enjoyable. Distracted me from pain in my hand and doctor stress very well in fact. The Curse of Chalion has a lot of the same themes as the VS anyway, old soldier, duty, honor, good vs. evil, all the fun stuff. Fantasy the way I like it, still fantasy, but just realistic enough that I don't snicker. (Meaning people get cold and old and sore and complain about it, but still get their shit done.) And like the VS, Curse manages to make politics interesting to me.

If we had assassinations and death magic in Washington, i think I'd be a lot more interested in RL. Alas, we do not, and must rely on riveting shit like filibusters.

Now amazon.com is tempting me with gay porn. Clearly not realizing that now I must choose between pretty-pretty and dinner. Hmmm.
