Anyway...Pooky and Kittie like to remind me of just how weirdly similar to Ideas of Sin it is despite being not slashy at all (though it was written when I first discovered slash). And how much Rene and Jack would have gotten along. And Mitch...*sighs* I still have a crush on Mitch.
Anyway (again), Kittie and I were discussing random influences...my view of fiction forever touched by reading Robin McKinley's 'Beauty' and 'the Outlaws of Sherwood' (not to mention 'the Blue Sword') and then Tamora Pierce's 'The Woman Who Rides Like a Man' series and then Elizabeth George Speare's 'The Witch of Blackbird Pond'. And then this book set during the American Revolution that we couldn't recall the name of, but which we checked out the library a million times when we were 14. (yes, we were D-O-R-K-S). That book, btw, is called, 'A Touch of Magic' despite having nothing to do with magic. I looked it up last night. (soooo cheesy I love it). All of which is why I wrote a Young Adult novel. Wanting to scar someone else in that same delicious way.
Soooo....Written years and years ago and I havent' really looked at it since. I give you Jack and Mitch. *blush* Total tomboy in late 19th century Nevada versus her very patient (and hot) best friend.
Jack paused behind Starbuck and waited. A moment later she relaxed and took away the hand she’d been edging closer to the rifle she had to carry across her saddle, just in case. She smiled widely, this time not caring about the stinging pain in her lip, and ran several feet to pounce on Mitch as he came out of the shadows. She didn’t think she’d ever been this happy to see him.
“I figured you’d be here…” he started to say but stopped when he saw her.
His eyes widened in surprise as she came running at him, grinning like a loony, but he responded just as he’d always done when she’d tackled him when they’d been younger. Which meant he sort of rolled with it so landing on the ground wouldn’t hurt as much and then wrestled with her for a few minutes. Well, it wasn’t really wrestling.
Mitch must have gotten stronger and not just bigger since the last time they’d done this, because somehow he broke free of every hold she had on him and then she ended up on the ground, not him. By the end, he had just about every part of her pinned to the ground with his arms and legs and his face was only about an inch above hers. He smiled triumphantly down at her, but then his smile sort of faded away and he flushed as red as Adam and Caleb did whenever Jack asked them what they did in town. She frowned up at Mitch in annoyance at that and was surprised to see him looking irritated with her, since, after all, he had won their tussle. And then instead of pressing his advantage, he just got up and dusted himself off. But she was grateful he had, she told herself, he was getting heavy anyway.
“Darnit, Jack!” he said in a scolding tone and held out a hand to help her up, which she ignored. She stood on her own and then grinned up at him while he dusted himself off and picked up his hat.
“Come to take me in, Marshall?” she asked in a low, playful tone, referring to the games they’d played here before. Mitch had always been the Marshall to her outlaw, and he had caught her a fair amount of the time. She’d thought the joke would make him smile, but instead he just shook his head.
“Still playing that game, Jack? I thought you’d outgrown those sort of things.” Mitch was looking his most disapproving as he said that, making Jack raise her chin defiantly.
“Yeah, well, maybe I like it,” Jack defended the stupid game she hadn’t even been playing and lifted her chin even higher, daring him to say anything about it. Not many other kids at school would have kept on her when she started to look like that, but Mitch probably knew her too well to be scared. Who was he to talk about her playing anyway, when he’d rather go talk with that group of Lorelei’s? “It’s a darn sight more fun than talking with Lorelei Thatcher and her friends,” Jack sneered as she said that, then she pranced around for a second, twirling an imaginary curl around her finger. “Have you noticed my curls?” she asked the air in a high, snooty voice and turned back in time to see Mitch’s quick smile.
His smile made her stop when she was back in front of him and stare at him expectantly. After a moment he shook his head and smiled again, almost reluctantly.
“Jack,” he said her name with a heavy sigh like there was nothing to be done with her and then lightly punched her in the arm, indicating that their fight was through and he was sorry. She punched him back very quickly to say the same, glad that their little argument was over. They stared at each other for a moment and then Jack shoved her hands into her coat pockets and looked down.

You know, this is an interesting kettle of porn. The whole issue of chan gets mauled over constantly on Harry Potter websites because, well, we have our young charges sucking dick. This was especially highlighted when Australia passed their extremely stringent child pornography laws and you saw a whole slew of Aussie's withdraw their fic because it was such a draconian law. Like if they raided your house and found stuff on your hard drive (even if you hadn't posted it on the web) you were liable.
I don't know how I feel about this. I don't believe in censorship, even though I think pornography contributes to the objectifying of women and violence on TV makes for a violent society. If media didn't affect people they wouldn't create it. We write because we want to affect people, I imagine people create violent and pornography to affect people, as well. But I have kids who are teenagers and I'm affected by this whole issue of school kids having sex. Not that sex isn't an open subject in my household, it is. Makes me think a lot about my role as a parent...blahblahblah.
And yet, yeah, young Jack and James, all skinny and raw-boned. HUZZAH!
