It occurs to one as driving and listening to yet another bad Madonna song (teh bitch) that Rene/Janes is a twisted version of every old movie in which the noble hero might sort of fall in love with the wicked-yet-good girl, but she dies for him and he ends up with the all-good-but-boring girl. Which always pisses one off, whenever one sees it. (Destry Rides Again my ASS! Rene isMarlene Dietrich and I swear to Christ the image of him in drag singing Falling in Love Again while smoking, in some trashy, faded German cabaret hottest funniest thing this side of Peanut Butter Jelly Time). None of which has anything to do with anything, btw. Just a thought.
And cannot help Kittie with current writing problem. She asks me how to make a certain character "work it". Since Rene works it. And James works it. And Horatio works it. And Archie works it. And (I guess) Sparrington work it. And Tai-shan works it. But Shang....the Shang does not work it. This is a problem. He worked it back in Dream of You (for those who have read the Saga)and hasn't since then. I don't know. I would need a definition of work it. *feels like an old lady*
'Live From Baghdad' is on behind me. I weirdly love this movie. I just find it fascinating. But am too exhausted from shopping expeditions to write today. And must get tree tomorrow.
Tree!!!!!

Maybe Rene thinks he's going to die. Oh woe is Rene...
I see James as a slutbunny. LOL. No he is clearly (to me) ogling shirtless sailors in chapter one, whether he admits it to himself or not. I think James responds to whoever responds to him and takes charge. Man or woman, you have to make the move or he won't do shit. He is practically begging for Etienne to jump him before Rene gets there. But if he had met Mirena before Rene had returned, and she had pounced, he would have followed. Only with the hookers, when he had to initiate. did he...uh...fail. (And how)
Sluttttbunneeee.
I have had too much espresso. Uh oh.

Okay, so now you've opened the veritable can of worms. This is the way to get chapter commentary without getting chapter commentary. Why didn't Etienee jump James? We're all dying to jump him.

I think Etienne and James might have a similiar M.O. when it comes to things of that nature. (Though not totally the same, not with that Saint-Cyr desire for violence). Also, Etienne had, at that time, no experience with men. And the belief that such things were beneath him etc...
Also, Etienne wouldn't have known what to do with a man. And he wouldn't expose any weakness to an outsider unless he trusted them, which is hard for the boy to do.

Considering Pere St. Cyr...the only one of that family who doesn't appear to be totally fucked up is Suzette.
You know that this makes the Deniau/Etienne potential plot bunny delicious beyond belief. Although I can't see him trusting Deniau...so what would be the kick in the ass (so to speak) that got this plot bunny moving? I can see acres and acres of verbal sparring back and forth between the two of them in hold of that ship. Hotter than blazes...this is really begging to be written.
And I had a thought about James Slutbunny Fitzroy. Perhaps Rene's freakass jealousy isn't so much a manifestation of his massive insecurities (okay, in addition to) as an instinct that James *is* a slutbunny of the first order. That he would pretty much pull anyone who pulled first. That James' capitulation in the cabin niggles at Rene all the time. That James shouldn't have enjoyed it QUITE so much.
Your boys. I love them.

You're right about James. Pooks and I make jokes, but James would certainly make me nervous, were I dating him. James did give in so very easily. And you know...you just know someday that is going to come up in an argument.
Reminds me...I owe you prezzie for being superfan. Hmmm.

Ooohhh, can't wait. There were hints of this in the carriage ride when Rene accused James of having a jones for Suzette, but James could easily ignore that as drunken rambling.
Prezzie? Squee! Although I would feel like I was taking it under false pretenses really, I am a fan because it really is a superior piece of fiction. It's intelligent writing. Which is rare. You don't dumb down to the reader. You make the reader work a bit. I like that.
But, uh, hey, you want to write me a prezzie, make that a double squee, no whip.
