Have you watched "Surviving History" from the History Channel?
A show in which members of a special effects team from the "Scare Factory" recreate various torture implements, weapons, and execution devices from throughout history. While it provides many nice, detailed studies of just how fucked up humans can be to each other, it also shows you first hand, because one thing the crew insists on is--that if they are going to show these devices, then one member of the team has to be it's victim to fully understand how horrible they are.
Yeah okay, they use safety measures and they don't actually kill anyone, but it's still incredibly scary and fucked up to witness. (And reckless, just a touch. I wonder how many of the macho designers and fabricators will admit to having a few bad nights after their experiences? After all, Chinese Water Torture *is* an actual torture still used today).
Overall sort of sickly fascinating and definitely worth a look. I love the one girl we see (Chrissy, the admin assistant) who actually had the guts to let them drop the Halifax Gibbet on her (look it up, because I would never ever ever have done it), and Brian, the rather sensitive (yet large and hairy) tech assistant.
Also, you *have* to love the Puritans, right? Could they be any sicker? How the hell did they think of that shit? (repressed fantasies, I know). And watch the Pillory recreation, whereby total strangers are oh so easily convinced to throw crap at someone locked up and helpless.
Human nature: it's a winner.
