Or did they? And let it go by in a subtle form of revenge? Because suddenly there is much much gay in the Maltese Falcon, not just Joel Cairo (and the whole set in San Francisco thing). Would explain the super-perviness of Spade though (see, he likes wimmin, he rilly rilly does). But why as a writer include so much gay at all then? Maybe a little obsession and interest there, Mr. Hammett?
