heh heh

Sorry. HP fandom major kerfuffle. And for once it doesn't involve shipping and shippers. (Fuckin' rabid shippers in any fandom...)

I just want to say that my reviews of stories suck. I have, many times, acknowledged my general disinterest in writing a well thought-out review. I bascially just say...'I liked it'. Sometimes I say, 'I liked the dialogue'. Or, 'that smut was hawt'. Or 'that one image she presented was amazing'. And sometimes, when motivated, I might write a bit of critique in there...sometimes...even if it's usually along the lines of, 'I wish that had been longer'. Whatever. I stick to recs and for the most part ignore the crap of the fanfic world. It is, at least to me, usually easy to tell the difference between fics written for shits and giggles and fic of *serious effort*. And my taste runs all over and I'm fairly forgiving of errors as long as characterization is at least attempted. Obviously, my recs are influenced by my life and all my shit. And I figure, people who read my recs must have similiar taste, or they wouldn't have bothered to read this LJ or the site. I even linked to my crap and gave them permission to bitch back at me (so far, no takers).

That being said, as a writer, I've stumbled across random recs and reviews of my work before. And it's awesome...and annoying. Because sometimes you find a review that actually points out some disturbing element in your story that you never noticed (oh dear, did I really secretly reach that level of perversion unbeknownest to even myself? oh dear oh dear). But then you get the fuck over it and get on with your life. And, as a reviewer, I've also had people I'd rec'd "confront" me with questions (actually demanding concrit, now that I think on it) or speak wistfully of more praise (hint away, if you write it and I like it, I will rec). It can get awkward even with praise involved, these are people's feelings here. (A lot of what this seemed to me to be anyway was some writer's hurt feelings about not getting rec'd or something. But you know, not everyone gets to make the team in the real world. And anyway, I'm sure other reviewers love their stories. For every great fic on FFnet with 1 review, there's a piece of total shit with 120 glowing reviews).

Personally, I do it to boost the writers. I do it because I liked and I want to share with others. I do it because some people prefer to read from recs pages rather than searching through archives. Intentions are good.

(Not that I haven't enjoyed many a post on the Godawful Fanfiction Forum---and lived in fear someone might post something of mine there---But it's a public forum to discuss publicly posted stories, as many people have already pointed out. If you don't want to risk that, either send it through email or Friendslock your shiznit and don't post in any archives or mailinglists/coms).
