Help!!

I have the strangest urge to go into a church. (Not *to* church. Not dress up and get up buttcrack early and attend an impossibly long and boring Mass. No thankee) Just to walk *into* a church. And like...walk around, I don't know. Light a candle. Technically I am not supposed to have Confession, as I was never Confirmed, but my mother swears I did it once anyway, and that they aren't that strict now. I think I just wanna see it, the inside I mean. The last time I was in an actual church, I was touring a Spanish cathedral in Toledo when I was about 17. And Spanish cathedrals, let me tell you, are boring and oppressive and just feel heavy. (Can't imagine why, Spanish Catholicism has always been so tolerant and free-spirited...) And before that...I can't even remember the last time I was in a space designated as 'holy ground'. Not even a chapel or some lame-ass Protestant church.

I would probably get the church giggles anyway. I always did. Though a friend who's the Jewiest of Jews has been amused at my idea of taking her in with me and bringing her along to sip some blood and wine. (Sacrilege!)

P.S. Q)How many people from the San Francisco Bay Area does it take to change a lightbulb?

Was gonna send you a little email asking you what's up and here you are contemplating going to mass.

I actually stayed in the church far longer because of the true majesty of the Catholic trappings. Stained glass, gilt everywhere, statues, all of it. No one does pomp and circumstance like the papists. I would even go so far to to say it might have been my only reason to join the church. That and I like to sing in choirs and hymns are very beautiful. I could made completely inappropriate comments about organs but I'm going to stop while I'm ahead.

HAHAHAHAHA! That's great.

And I'm assumning that we're talking about the prince with the guitar, not the prince with an HRH monogrammed on his sheets.

I remember being at Berkeley and some friends dragging me to see Purple Rain. I kicked and screamed in protest (I mean, why should I waste my Saturday night going to a movie about a nobody from Michigan (when I could get stoned, and, plus, you have to understand I was a Rolling Stones/Beatles/Allman Brothers whore). Naturally, I then hated myself for being so provincial. I was completely blown away by that movie. And the music! I don't understand the weirdnesses that he's publically manifested over the years since, but I came away from that movie convinced he was a genius.

You can't help but love the little freak. though there's a film professor who shows Purple Rain as an example of how *not* to make a film.

But for a rock star film, it's amazing.

Last I was in a church was at St. Joseph's back in August for a funeral. Mass isn't what it used to be though - we used to go every Sunday. It's all touchy feeling and perky now. Dude, where's the part where I'm bad and am going to Hell?

There's some rabid Agnus Dei offshoots in Berkeley where they have resurrected the Latin mass that will make you feel the heat from hell's fires.
