Abe likey the soldier-boys...

I am totally crushing Abe Lincoln right now. Which is very weird. I got sucked into History Channel special on him...which I recommend despite cheesy use of bluegrass music everytime they mentioned his childhood. Featured, surprisingly, talk about the whole gay rumor, as well as a lot of talk about his depression (as well as Mary Todd's existence as a psycho hose beast) which of course I found riveting. I love the fucked-up-psyche-leading-to-greatness syndrome. Mmmm it was like a little Lawrence of Arabia documentary...but the crazy wife to torture himself instead paying some mechanic to do it. Also comforting to see him calling himself a loser until he was about 45 and then suddenly rising up like gangbustahs. (I like to say gangbusters...it makes me feel like a very old man who grew up listening to radio shows LOL)

I am a history geek! Yay! Lincoln groupie!!!

And I adore Gore Vidal--who actually tears up as he recounts how Lincoln died. How can you not love this?
*as she alienates entire household by monopolizing TV for this for two hours*

Still...surprisingly good. All should watch.

Gore Vidal's "Lincoln" is one of the most moving books I have ever read. Just brilliantly done.

Yeah, Mary Todd Lincoln really invented bat-shit insane. She was a CLASSIC manic depressive right down to the compulsive spending thing associated with this disorder. And consider she was buying for the White House. Talk about a maniac in a candy store. But if I'd lost all those children, I'd be bat-shit insane. And then Robert had her committed, which if you've ever read a biography of her it seemed like yes, she was crazy, but she was harmless. It really boiled down to him wanted her locked away so that she couldn't spend his inheritance. He comes across as a VERY cold fish. None of the humanity of his father.

you know I never have money to buy books unless they're used. if Orinda library doesn't have it then I shall have to dig around on Amazon.

Civil War slash...Wrong? Too sacred still?

I think, on the sliding scale of wrong, it's not so high up there as Schindler's List slash, if that makes you feel any better. Besides, I thought you had Civil War James/Rene all worked out ;p They are always destined to be on opposite sides of the conflict, and yet will never be Romeo and Juliet because they're too horny to let all that emnity stand in the way of their buttsex hahahah

[identity profile] rispacooper.livejournal.com 2006-01-17 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
you know buttsex in the midst of capulet/montague conflict might have killed the mood.

unless it was romeo/mercutio buttsex

hmmm imre knows someone who writes Nazi slash. I will say that Ralph Fiennes was hot in that film...slashing the Pianist would also be wrong. wrong wrong wrong. Though Bret (my WWII geek) says Nazi uniforms were designed to be sexy. so...yeah

I want Romeo/Tybolt buttsex *whines*

Nazi slash isn't wrong, jus slashing that movie. Yeah RF is FOINE, but . . . Whereas slashing the Pianist isn't as wrong to me for some reason. I guess cos their love is pure, in my head.

just amused at how we say their love is pure to cover our perversity

heh heh

Orinda library will have this book. It was on the NYT's bestseller list for something like two years. It's a stunning book. But then Gore Vidal is, I think, one of the American writers of the 20th century.

Civil War slash. God, a NATURAL!

haha
