I live in the tropics about 15 minutes from the Caribbean. I only (stereotypically) have rum.

Tequila is like a foreign drink to me.

Tequila is a thousand times cooler than rum. It still invokes images of badassery (okay and Pee Wee Herman dancing in a bar in big shoes) and yet is still also so, so good in margaritas.

Seriously, though, I think it's a humidity thing. Our booze needs to be sweet and go well with tropical fruits and tequila, being from the cactus, goes better in dry environments.
